Winners of
The Chicago Battle of the Jug Bands
2009, 2011 and 2013 too!
As Jug Nuts, we love jug band music, especially as fused with music from the 60's and 70's.
Led by our hearts, we will get on the road at the drop of a jug.

Strictly Jug Nuts was organized in 2008 by long-time Old Town School teacher Skip Landt. The band includes key members of the jug band that won the 25th Annual Battle of the Jug Bands in Minnesota in 2007 and others whose music appears on collections and CDs including Jugs Across America, Hare of the Jug, Good For What Ail's Ya, and the Old Town School Songbook Collection.
Strictly Jug Nuts has performed at festivals, concerts, workshops, and other social gatherings since 2008. Early in our history, we drew the largest Sunday workshop audience at that year's University of Chicago Folk Festival. Since then, the band has racked up performances at the Old Town School of Folk Music - First Friday series, the Folk and Roots Festival Staff Stage, the Wells Park Fun Fair, the Caxton Club Revels, the Garfield Park Conservatory, area coffee houses and art show openings, and benefits for organizations including the American Cancer Society. In 2011 we celebrated the lives of Joe and Joe and Charlie McCoy by dedicating their gravestones at the Restvale Cemetary in Summit, Illinois. This ceremony concluded a multi-year fund-raising effort by Arlo Leach which had raised the required funds. During the summer of 2012 Strictly Jug Nuts hosted the first Jug Band Peace Summit, co-featuring the Roe Family Singers, winners of the 2011 Minneapolis Battle, to a non-competitive program at Martys, a popular Chicago club.
recycling logo We're dedicated to recycling and reflect that dedication. We wear resale-store clothing, play recycled/repurposed music, and recycle our skills into life-enhancing, environmentally positive music. In 2013 we are for the third time headlining at the Skokie Spring Greening, a major Northern Illinois recycling festival drawing vendors and participants from throughout the area. Two years ago we were honored by being invited to perform on an Iowa episode of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. While scheduling did not permit our participation, the invitation reflected the increasing visibility of our commitment.
The band also had another high honor: we changed a long musical tradition when playing at the Town of Fort Sheridan annual picnic. Our family friendly jug band music replaced years of marches and similar music by uniformed military bands.

But our greatest honor has been in twice winning the Chicago Battle of the Jug Bands (most recently in 2011), and having our name inscribed upon "the Stuffy," the antique sausage press trophy. As reigning champs we performed the opening set for the 2012 Chicago Battle.

Strictly Jug Nuts includes guitar, mandolin, banjo, uke, harmonica, jug, croaker, and kazoo, with washtub bass, washboard, and kitcheware, canjo, melodia, and chimes. We offer hands-on, jug, kazoo, and percussion opportunities so audiences can join in the fun.

Say...

"Strictly Jug Nuts is a musical feast for preschoolers. At RELC the children were immediately drawn into the high energy percussion and creative versions of old favorites, folk music, and hilarious original lyrics. The spectrum of sounds and instruments is awesome! Highly recommended!"

--Allan Howe, Board Chair, Reba Early Learning Center, Evanston

"We had a fabulous time! Your band is really great! Please let us know when you are playing again. Our son, miraculously, didn't fall asleep on the way home. He played his kazoo and sang the whole way home. You inspired him. Thanks again! We all loved it.

-- J

"Their show, their gimmick, their music, takes you on a musical journey letting your mind roam freely. Within the band Strictly Jug Nuts, they have captured a live music show that is incredible, original, and leaves a warm feeling within you after they are done."

"Everyone loved the band. You are really great!!! It absolutely made the evening. I can't thank you enough."
--Laura Cerf-Dahl, Chicago Women's Art Caucas

Strictly Jug Nuts is just a phenomenal act that caught everyone’s attention. They played the washboard, a banjo, kazoos, acoustic guitars and a bunch of other instruments that are not seen much these days. They did a great version of “My Blue Heaven” in a style that was warm and easy on the ears.
