Chicago Battle of the Jug Bands
Strictly Jug Nuts was organized in 2008 by long-time Old Town School teacher Skip Landt. As Jug Nuts, we love jug band music, especially when it's fused with music from the 60's and 70's. As we're led by our hearts, we will get on the road at the drop of a jug.
The band includes key members of the jug band that won the 25th Annual Battle of the Jug Bands in Minnesota in 2007 and individuals whose music appears on collections and CDs including Jugs Across America, Hare of the Jug, Good For What Ail's Ya, and the Old Town School Songbook Collection.
Strictly Jug Nuts has performed at festivals, concerts, workshops, and other social gatherings, including the 2008 Chicago Battle of the Jug Bands and the 2008 Caxton Club Revels and Annual Auction. In February 2009, SJN their workshop/concert drew an all-ages crowd at the University of Chicago Folk Festival. in 2010 and 2011, we had the unique experience of being tradition breakers: a long tradition of entertainment by military bands was broken when we were hired to play our jug band music at the annual picnic for the Town of Fort Sheridan.

In 2011 we celebrated the lives of Joe and Joe and Charlie McCoy by dedicating their gravestones at the Restvale Cemetary in Summit, Illinois. In 2011 we were invited to play on the national television program Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (but had to decline). Perhaps our greatest honor has been in twice winning the Chicago Battle of the Jug Bands (2009, 2011), and having our name inscribed upon "the Stuffy," the antique sausage press trophy.

The band includes guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, jug, croaker, and kazoo, with Boom Boom on washtub bass, Jake on his unique electrified washboard, and Petrie on kitcheware, canjo, melodia, and chimes. We offer hands-on, jug, kazoo, and percussion opportunities so audiences can join in the fun.

What
People
Say...

"Strictly Jug Nuts is a musical feast for preschoolers. At RELC the children were immediately drawn into the high energy percussion and creative versions of old favorites, folk music, and hilarious original lyrics. The spectrum of sounds and instruments is awesome! Highly recommended!"

--Allan Howe, Board Chair, Reba Early Learning Center, Evanston

"We had a fabulous time! Your band is really great! Please let us know when you are playing again. Our son, miraculously, didn't fall asleep on the way home. He played his kazoo and sang the whole way home. You inspired him. Thanks again! We all loved it.

-- J

"Their show, their gimmick, their music, takes you on a musical journey letting your mind roam freely. Within the band Strictly Jug Nuts, they have captured a live music show that is incredible, original, and leaves a warm feeling within you after they are done."

"Everyone loved the band. You are really great!!! It absolutely made the evening. I can't thank you enough."
--Laura Cerf-Dahl, Chicago Women's Art Caucas

Strictly Jug Nuts is just a phenomenal act that caught everyone’s attention. They played the washboard, a banjo, kazoos, acoustic guitars and a bunch of other instruments that are not seen much these days. They did a great version of “My Blue Heaven” in a style that was warm and easy on the ears.
